Malik, and Cooking with Joey, a cookbook of family recipes by Joseph Zoilo. Side by side, they’re a fair example of how differently “publishing support” actually has to work depending on what’s being published.

On the memoir side, the harder questions are about what a publishing partner should never touch, the story of a petroleum engineer’s wife facing both leukemia and the Gulf War in the same year belongs entirely to the family who lived it: A Petroleum Engineer’s Memoir of the Year His Wife Faced Both Leukemia and a War.

On the cookbook side, the questions are almost entirely about usability, how a recipe reads mid-cooking, not about improving anyone’s actual recipes: Eighteen Family Recipes, One Home Cook: How Cooking with Joey Came Together.

A memoir and a cookbook ask almost nothing of the same kind from a publishing partner. One needs structural and editorial care around a true story, told with a Quran verse the author returns to and a foreword line about a wife who “lived like a star and even died as a star.” The other needs layout and formatting built around how someone actually cooks from a page, and a bit of coordination with an author who’s already building an audience on YouTube. That range is close to the actual shape of the work at American Liberty Publishers day to day, across editing, cover design, formatting, and the production work most readers never think about until a book either works smoothly in their hands or doesn’t.

If you’d rather hear about that work from clients directly than from us, <a
